WWE SummerSlam 2024 Review, Highlight & Results

WWE SummerSlam was live yesterday, August 3rd, on Peacock. The show took place at Cleveland Browns Stadium in front of 55.858 fans. Hosted by The Miz and Corey Graves. Michael Cole & Pat McAfee were on commentary. The special musical guest was Jelly Roll.

My review is below, plus results with match times from Cagematch. Also included are social media highlights.

WWE SummerSlam 2024 Review, Highlights, and Results

  • WWE Women's World Title Match: Liv Morgan (c) def. Rhea Ripley (w/ Dominik Mysterio) (15:53)

This is the best story in pro wrestling right now, and I’m really glad it’s not over. A lot of fans, myself included, saw the Dom turn coming. But it was done so well, I truly wasn’t sure whose side he was on when he stopped Rhea from getting DQ’d.

Great match and the result will lead to Rhea becoming even more loved, with the opposite for Liv & Dom.

  • WWE Intercontinental Title Match: Bron Breakker def. Sami Zayn (c) (5:42) And New Champion!

Surprisingly short, which I’m ok with. Not every match needs to be 15-25 minutes on these specials. I think it makes the first 10 minutes kind of pointless since that’s usually the case.

Bron got a huge win here at SS. Now the sky is the limit for him and Sami will be fine.

  • WWE United States Title Match: LA Knight def. Logan Paul (c) (12:04) AND New Champ!

Back to back new champs surprised me. Again, that’s great though. I don’t want to know everything that’s going to happen, which is the case for most other promotions.

I’ve been a fan of LA Knight since he was on The Hero, a reality show hosted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Awesome to see him as a WWE champ.

  • WWE Women's Title Match: Nia Jax def. Bayley (c) (12:33) AND New Champ!

Three in a row?! I would have lost money gambling on this one. First, I thought Bayley would win, then I thought if not, Tiffany would definitely cash in. Wrong twice! Nicely played WWE, other than Nia beating Bayley.

Nothing personal though. I’m a Bayley mark and think she deserved a longer run.

  • Singles Match (Special Referee: Seth “Freakin’” Rollins): Drew McIntyre def. CM Punk (16:58)

I was most excited for this match, until it started. All three got intros and there was a lot of BS that kept bringing it to a halt. There wasn’t much I liked about this, other than Drew winning.

  • WWE World Heavyweight Title Match: Gunther def. Damian Priest (c) by referee's decision (16:38) AND New Champ!

Four New Champs?! Is this a reboot?! Totally cool with this change. I like Priest but feel he should be in the IC/US mix. Gunther, on the other hand, is a monster that is a totally believable World Champion.

Loved the result. Match was just ok.

  • WWE Title / WWE Universal Title Bloodline Rules Match: Cody Rhodes (c) def. Solo Sikoa (29:13)

I felt like Solo had no chance here, and that’s a problem for his character or WWE pushing him too quickly. Well, he lost after getting help from Bloodline members, Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa.

They were stopped by Randy Orton and Kevin Owen. Then Jacob Fatu came out and destroyed Cody, which led to the return of ROMAN REIGNS!!

Kind of weird. I felt he overshadowed Cody’s win. That might have been the point though.

Final Grade: 9.1

It may not sound like it, but this was one of my favorite WWE shows in a long time. It was four hours and didn’t feel long, which is amazing to me.

The awesome long term story of Liv, Dom, and Rhea will keep going.

There’s a lot of new champs, which opens up all kinds of new storylines and matches.

And the biggest news is Roman’s back! He took out Solo, but I don’t think that means he’s going to work with Cody against them. We’ll see, but I saw Roman give Cody a look that said, “that wasn’t for you, and I’m going to get my title back”.

Could totally be in my head, we shall see!
