5 Sci-Fi Shows You Probably Haven’t Watched, But Should

We are living in a time where television, or tv shows, are separated on all different apps. So this list is about some great, underrated shows that readers may have missed out on.

Due to there being a ridiculous amount which are spread out in so many places. It’s so frustrating! I miss basic cable! #OldManYelling

So this is my first of these type of lists and I’m leading off with sci-fi shows. One of my favorite genres. You can find all kinds of lists in our LISTractions section. Ok, everyone ready? Let’s get to it.

5 Sci-Fi Shows You Probably Haven’t Watched, But Should

#5: The Orville

Seth MacFarlane is the creator and lead in the series. A lot of his work is hit or miss with me, but when it hits, it really hits. I’m also a Star Wars guy, not Star Trek. No offense, it’s just what I grew up on. I’ve caught up on most everything Star Trek related since, and still a Star Wars guy.

With that said, I feel like “The Orville” is or was an updated version of Star Trek, and I loved it. Especially the first season, some of the show ideas were totally insane but they worked somehow. Unlike other shows listed, I think The Orville show got worse in season two and three.

Just my opinion, I’ve seen many say otherwise. Overall, you have to check it out if you’re a Star Trek fan. And you should check it out if you’re a sci-fi fan.

#4: FROM

The MGM (was Epix) original series created by John Griffin is led by “Lost” star Harold Perrineau. Which is very fitting because I’ve been searching for a “Lost”-like show since it ended. So many have tried and failed, some miserable failures, some decent.

FROM is easily the best thing since, in terms of mystery type sci fi shows. It starts off so very strong, you know what you’re getting into pretty quickly.

But also, you don’t. And I’d love to explain more. But it’s mostly a mystery show with sci-fi and a bit of horror, comedy, drama, etc. Harold tweeted in June that the series is returning for a third season. I can’t wait and I urge you all to check it out.

#3: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

I’m a Terminator fan, not a huge one tho. Mostly due to the many bad movies since the amazing part two. So I wasn’t very excited about “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and it started a bit slow. Then it really picks up and it’s a very fun and smart show with all kinds of cool nods to the movies.

As I started writing these, I realized it’s very difficult to talk about a show without spoiling much of anything. But I’m trying. This one ends with a huge cliffhanger which is never resolved. So if you hate that kind of thing, move on. It’s a super interesting tease of something that will never happen. Odd.

Josh Friedman created the series which tries to stay in line with the original movies timeline. Terminator timelines are beyond saving, they do a really nice job. And there’s a lot of new ideas, which I think should have been used for movies. Instead of rehashing the same thing over and over, like they’ve been doing. Ok, too many words…give it a try.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is available on Hulu.

#2: Travelers

This is the reason I made this list. It would be #1 but sadly, “Travelers” only lasted 3 seasons. I saw this show on a similar list and I’m so happy I did. I’ve re-watched it multiple times and keep noticing little things.

“Travelers” are a team sent from the future to try and save the world. They are sent thru a host body, which is about to die, which they take over. That probably sounds confusing. Just watch the pilot, or trailer posted above and I think you’ll be hooked. Then it only gets better and better and better. Then it ends, it’s over and you’re going to want more.

Brad Wright is the creator, it’s available on Netlix.

#1: Fringe

One of my all-time favorite shows, this one comes from J.J Abrams. It’s an incredibly underrated series with extremely well-written characters. The show did get off to a very rough start in season one. They basically rebooted at the end of it. Maybe it was planned, I’m not sure, it was totally awesome tho.

It started as a basic sci-fi romance show, with very good acting and writing. There’s a show-changing twist in the S1 finale, I won’t ruin it, because that’s the point of this. For readers who haven’t seen the shows.

I can say the main character “Olivia Dunham”, played by Anna Torv, started out kind of boring. Now she’s my favorite female tv character, ever. That’s how amazing she is in this.

John Noble is an amazing actor and this is one of his best role or roles (can’t explain, spoilers). Every scene he’s in, is gold and he’s a co-star, so it’s nonstop greatness. Joshua Jackson is the 3rd of the main characters, playing Peter. Noble plays his father and anything more would be spoilers.

Fringe is available on Max, Amazon Prime and elsewhere.
