Grading Saturday Night Live December 9, 2023 Hosted by Adam Driver

I’m currently watching Saturday Night Live on Peacock, and decided to try and review it. The December 9, 2023 SNL edition starts off with a pretty weak cold open. I’m not even sure what it was about. Then Adam Driver does the monologue and killed it! I’ve only gotten to see him do comedy on SNL, and I want a lot more. His facial expressions alone are hysterical.

  • The first “Saturday Night Live” skit was about three different couples. One announced having a new baby and the gay couple said they were trying also. The joke was they weren’t adopting or anything normal, they were having sex, attempting to have a baby. This was really funny.

  • Next up was a skit about two old friends reconnecting. One of them, played by Driver, who was totally messed up in every way. It ended with a joke about why you should be on Facebook, to keep track of crazy old friends. Another good one.

  • Three straight skits, usually there’s a commercial type, but not yet or I missed it. Now, Driver is hosting a Christmas party with a bunch of friends. This was pretty dumb, Driver’s character kept getting in the way which led to a silly argument. Not good, but watchable.

  • Another full skit, this one is about “Shop TV”. Kind of a QVC parody. It was purposefully lame, which was cool. Then Driver’s character is selling/showing off a chocolate bar he made…that looked just like a penis. He started rubbing it, the hosts were freaking and Driver’s character was oblivious. This was ok, Driver was excellent again.

  • 1st musical segment by Olivia Rodrigo, playing her hit song “Vampire”. Great song and she sounded awesome.

  • Weekend Update time and I can’t keep up with this for notes. These are usually hysterical, IMO. Not so much this week. There were some good jokes like always. But I thought too many were political and not as funny as normal. There was a guest cast member (missed his name) doing a joke about men being depressed. I’m guessing others might like it more than me.

Colin Jost and Michael Che have awesome chemistry, I love when they mess with each other. It ended with another cast member doing some weird dancing while explaining the plot of “Save the Last Dance”. Seemed off and random until Julia Stiles came out and joined! (star of the movie) Very cool ending to save this otherwise weak-end update, and the crowd went nuts.

  • Skit on an airplane, mother apologizing for her baby being on the plane. The baby was played by “11 month old” Adam Driver. He looked like an adult to everyone, cause it was Driver’s head on a baby body, acting like a baby. Hard to explain this one and it wasn’t very funny. But again, Driver is so great and committed to everything that it’s worth watching.

  • 2nd musical segment by Olivia Rodrigo. I knew the first song, not this one. Ok, I’m liking it, they got a cool set and it’s a damn good performance by her. Think I just became a fan.

  • Skit about older people getting angry about TikTok pranks. This was short, simple and totally hysterical. “Don’t tell me you’re gay just to see my reaction” made me LOL.

  • Another short skit to end the show. This was about a “tiny ass bag” on sale and not very funny. Probably for the best after the previous skit, so I didn’t overrate the episode. Again, that TikTok skit was fantastic.

Overall Grade: 8.1
